What you need to know about BEC

Here's what you need to know

BEC Format Change

BEC as we know it is coming to an end. Starting in 2024 the exam will take a new shape. Here’s what you need to know.

In 2024 the Business Environment and Concepts CPA exam will cease to exist. And in its place there will be 3 new exams. CPA candidates will get to pick 1 of the 3 to pass, along with the other 3 remaining CPA exams (AUD, FAR, and REG).

The 3 exams taking over from BEC are;

1) Business Analysis and Reporting

2) Information Systems and Controls

3) Tax Compliance and Planning.

Important dates to keep in mind for this transition are;

October 1st- Last day to apply for BEC NTS (if you’ve never sat for BEC)

November 12th- Last day to apply for BEC NTS (if you’ve already sat and not passed BEC)

December 15th- Last day to take BEC in current format

January 10th- First day to sit for any section in 2024

* dates are applicable to most states, be sure to check NASBA’s official guidance

Things to keep in mind:

  • If you have passed any of the other exams this change will not impact that at all. You will still have those credits and the same credit expiration dates.

  • The exam you pick out of the 3 will have no impact on your future career path.

  • You must pass one of the new sections as well as REG, AUD, and FAR.

  • The BEC planner listed on cpaexamplanners.com will continue to be applicable for any of the new versions of the exam.

Notes/Recommendations:

1) The Daily Stoic- One of my favorite books I’ve read this year. Filled with great, short chapters that can give you daily practical stoic ideas and practices to help improve your focus, self control, and emotions. Would highly recommend this book and other content by Ryan Holiday (podcasts, website, other books, etc.).

3) A fine is a tax for doing wrong… but a tax is a fine for doing well… 🤔
